Guess which car this steering wheel is from...
« on: November 16, 2008, 05:32:12 PM »

Try to take a guess, if you really must know the URL will tell you.  But to be honest, i was not expecting a car of this caliber to have a steering wheel that is IMO the epitome of lame sauce.

Must have been a popular wheel for Porsche for a bit.

Looks like a 944

... or 928

Nothing wrong with that steering wheel, besides it was only used in the non-911 Porsches.  Nobody cares about those.

Nobody cares about 959's?  Cus thats what the pic i posted originally was the interior of.

As for the steering wheel, sweet crap what were they thinking?  That thing is teeerrrible.  I'm guessing it was probably a packaging constraints issue with airbags that caused them to do that?

Who'd want a 959?  You can't even drive the thing legally in the US.

Seriously though, its just a steering wheel.  It doesn't have to look good, just feel good in your hand.  I'd say the fact that it controls a Porsche will make it feel pretty damn good.

I would like a 944 Turbo, been considering swapping the UrS4 for one.

I think for a VERY GOOD 944 Turbo, you'd be happy.  Until you drove it in the snow.  My brother's was "fun", even in the rain...

That was Porsche's standard steering wheel throughout the 80s. They didn't have airbags, so that's not the reason they looked like that.

More than half of the Audi guys around here have 944's as their track cars.... they are all nuts!

I thought it was a 964 steering wheel and you can legally drive 959's in the states its just a lot of work to get them DOT approved.  A lot of them got passed through back in the day as gray market cars therefore it was a bit easier.  Anyone you go to buy now most likely had it already done.

Last I read even Bill Gates' car was only allowed to be driven on the track and it was only allowed as a "show" car.  Sorry, as cool as they are if I were to spend that kind of money on a car I'd be driving it every day.

The 959 was notoriously a bitch to get DOT/EPA approved, so none were really imported as grey-market cars. There were supposedly a few (most notably Bill Gates had one) that just sat in customs holding areas for years while people tried in vain to get them approved or exempted. Only recently, with Bruce Canepa stepping up to the plate in a big way to get them federalized, have Americans been able to legally import and register 959s.

Again, the steering wheel posted in the first pic was Porsche's "standard" wheel during the 80s. It came on the 911, 928, 930, 944, 951, 959, 964, probably the early 965, and I'd bet the B32.

seems like i heard that gates even had software written to simulate the crash data. that's just a rumor i heard though. like josh said, it was only recently that 959's have been allowed on public roads.

The major hangup with the 959 wasn't actually the safety, it was the emissions.
