Thad's 911 thread
« on: February 05, 2009, 06:15:48 PM »

Sorry to impose, but I have a friend interested in 911 info so I figured I could use some input from Josh and others on this forum to help him out. Josh, I'm going to steal some of your pics off the bat too. Please don't hate me.... at least you get to look at some cool 911s!

The car in question is a 911 SC as a starting point.

Bumpers:

911 Iroc One of my favorite cars. Wide fenders like on the 930 Turbos and RSRs. Lighter fiberglass bumpers available aftermarket. Room in front bumper for oil cooler and brake ducts. Also, unlike a 964 bumper, you only have two lights to get, and they may be what you already have.

Heres a link to pictures of 911 Iroc flares and bumpers being put on:

(930) 911 Turbo Targa - same body as a 911SC but with larger fenders and a whaletail. Fiberglass and metal fender flares are available and would be easy to put on.

So what input are you asking for?  I love 911s, and the 74-89s are a good solid base that are relatively cheap, especially when compared with the early long-nose 911s - think a split windshield bus vs. a vanagon.  I have a soft spot for the 964, but anything thats Porsche and air-cooled floats my boat.

So what year is this 911 SC that your friend is interested in, and at what price?

i don't remember the year, but i think its 78 or 79. he likes the 964 look too. the problem with the 964 look is buying all the lights. the rear lights seem like they would be a pain to fit up. speaking of lights, did carlos use 964 lights on his mk3 front bumper? i was wondering what they cost.

one of the reasons for changing the bumpers is that he is interested in fitting a front oil cooler. the 964 front bumper looks big enough for an oil cooler.

another thing he is curious about is twin plug motors. anyone know what the reasoning behind twin plugs?

Yes thad, I used 964 lights... I think the shop was this porsche performance place out of cali, I could look in the box, I had to buy 3 sets of lights till they were just right as the first 2 deformed from the heating and bending to fit. They were 75 a piece.

When you have a combustion chamber that is a nice, tight and small shape, one central spark plug ignites the mixture and the flame spreads out from there pretty well.  Now, if you have a larger combustion chamber, and try to have a high compression ratio by filling up that chamber with a domed piston, the flame front has a long way to go to get to all the areas and burn all the mixture.  To enable the flamefront to travel quickly (so we burn all the mixture and create heat expansion and therefore pressure), you can put one plug on one side of the dome and one plug on the other side of the dome.

This is more common on very domed combustion chambers like the 911, or Harleys, or NSU's!

good info carlos. i thought that's what you used. $75 doesn't seem bad for porsche parts..

good info greg. i didn't know that about nsu's. you doing anything special with yours like twin plugs? also, could there be another benefit to twin plugs because pooling of the fuel since the cylinders are almost horizontal?

No worries THad.  I can try to get the name of the place if you like.  And just to clarify that was 75 a light, so 150 a pair.  Not too bad but when you have to buy 3 of them it gets to be a pain :D

I will likely do twin plugs on my NSU because I will be having high domes for high compression.  I don't see any benefit for any other reason - there isn't any fuel pooling or pudlding issue I have ever heard of or read about.  The actual time involved is extremely short, and gravity has very little affect compared to the pressures and flows involved, in my limited opinion.  The only time puddling becomes an issue for a boxer engine is with engine oil after it sits.  You can see soem boxers puff some oil smoke on startup sometimes for that reason (older BMW bikes, Bugs, 911s, etc).
