Wifes A6 T-boned (PICTS ADDED)
« on: October 06, 2009, 07:56:09 AM »

Well, I'll get pictures later ~ but the short of it is: Last night @ union and briargate while making a left, a guy racing up the turn lane at @50 w/ traffic stopped, t-boned my wife in her 2001 A6 2.7T 6-speed.

Anyone need parts?

Longer story:  While making a left from west-bound Briargate into the western gas station, 2 lanes of traffic were completely stopped.  They left enough room and waived her through, but a gentleman ~ who admittedly had a terrible weekend, and being upset that he wasn't being let in from the slow (3rd) lane (which, btw, changed into a turn lane) was traveling at a conservative 45mph trying to 'go around'.  As he rounded the curve, my wife's car was there to meet him.

WHAM!

The little Chevy Cavalier hit the A6 directly in the passenger front and rear doors.  The blow knocked the A6 (which is easily 1.5 times the Cav's weight) 20 feet.  The passenger seat is now 6" wide.  The door is in the seats area, the car is curved 6-12" in a semi-circle.  Roof is gone.  Rockers are close to the center console.  The whole car seems to be shaped like a catchers mit immediately after catching a fast-ball.  Removing the fact my wife was in the car, I'm EXTREMELY impressed with the impact.  You just look at it and go "wow!"

Anyway, my wife was ticketed for not yielding the right-of-way and the accident is obviously her fault.  She's obviously bruised pretty good, but otherwise Okay.  The driver of the other car was in shock for quite some time but besides a bloody lip from the airbag, is also okay.  Both cars, obviously totaled.

So I'm thinking about picking the car up from the insurance (once they offer it) and part it out.  Its a 2001 Audi A6, 2.7T w/ 118k on the clock.  6-speed.  black and tan.  Has the factory 17" BBS 'web' wheels with newer tires.  We literally had is serviced last week.   :banghead:

Anyone need some audi parts?

Glad to hear she's ok. Sucks about the car though, but it's replaceable.

I know someone who would be interested in all the 6spd parts (trans, axles, shifter box and rods)

Thanks Chris.

I was obviously not so light-hearted about it after it happened, but having everyone walk away ~ with relatively minor bruising, has let me see the accident as simply that ~ an accident.

I know someone who would be interested in all the 6spd parts (trans, axles, shifter box and rods)
Sounds good.  As long as its cost-effective to buy back the car ~ and I don't have to remove anything... I'm good with that.

That said.  The front clip seem completely untouched in the accident.  Didn't even spill any coolant.

Let me know, if you end up keeping it and parting it out

I know the price that Audi only was going to charge me for it so we can talk

A thread without pictures is useless...so.. .What you all been waiting for.

At first glance, doesn't look that bad!

Then you see the other side to that coin.  Can anyone say two-face?

How deep is that hit?  "No honestly its a wide-body kit!

At least you don't have to open the door to get things out anymore.

From the inside you can see the entire dash is pushed over.  The door did a reverse lambo-thing and tried to gull wing inward.  See under the panel, its still attached to the metal!

Interior = bad.

Seat folded like a soft-taco from toxic-hell (tacobell).

Rear seat gone too.

We're dang lucky that the kids weren't with Christy.  There's normally a 9-11 year old in those seats.  They would have been getting cavalier bumper removed from their hips if they were.

Not saying that my wife wasn't at fault ~ after all, she was making a left.  But dang man ~ that hit was a MASSIVE hit.  All other traffic stopped (letting her through) what the &$%^ was that guy going that fast for?  Seriously.

This is very likely why the hit was so hard.  It peeves me that though she was turning left, if he'd been driving at a more reasonable speed into a crowd of cars, this would not have happened.

My point exactly.   He even admitted (to the police) that is exactly what he was doing. His skid marks were like 6' long ~ which means he hit the brakes about .05 seconds before the impact.  Kinda sucks that the law turns a blind-eye to that fact simply because my wife was turning left.

Oh well.  Car's dead.  Wife is alive.  Everyone is okay and I have a mini-van to look forward to  :banghead: Hopefully the A6 will be scavenged for parts ~ at least, if I have anything to do with it.  I just hope that the insurance allows us to buy it back so we can 'recycle' the parts and let something else live again/longer.

I will say that I'm extremely impressed with the Audi's ability to take a hit.  Heaven knows what would have happened if I were in a newer American car.  Not to say anything about American cars, but (unless its a Cadillac) they simply do not build cars as solid as the Germans.  They build for the Autobahn, we build for parking lots.

Yes I did.  I will be responding to it as soon as I hear $$ from the insurance agency.

Insurance came back on the car.  Now its up to us to decide on weather or not we want to buy it back.  The bad news is that they didn't tell us what they'd sell us the car for.

This is how it works:  They buy the car from us, then auction it for as much as they can.  Their auction house is Copart ~ and anyone registered with Copart can bid.

My problem is, that I"d really like to buy the car, and part the salvageable pieces to anyone interested, but not knowing what it'll cost to pick up the car, I can't be sure if I can sell the pieces to make it worth my while.  Any thoughts?

Insurance came back with a salvage total on the car.  I'd need $3k for the entire car.  The salvage is actually under that, but when the way they handle it, is they 'buy' the car from you and then sell it.  So they include sales tax.  If I get it back, they do not include sales tax which cuts almost a third of the cost of the car. :banghead:

:-\  I'll need to know if anyone wants the entire car or not.  At that price I will not buy it back and hope to sell its parts/pieces. :'( :t-down:

That sucks dude.  I know I am bumping an old thread but it's good to hear no one was injured.

Lucky no one was on the passenger side.

Last fall my mother was in her brand new Toyota Highlander sitting at a stop light waiting to turn left.  A 16 year old girl who fell asleep driftend into the left and turn lane going the opposite direction and hit my mother head on while she was stopped at about 60 MPH.

Damage:

Obviously she hit her just off center.

My mother and her passenger walked away for the most part although they both went for a ride in the Amby to get checked over and evaluated.  Both were very sore, my mother had a swollen ankle from the brake pedal coming up and back into her foot.  Both of them had bruising on their chest from the seat belt.

Car had 1000 miles on it, they had it for two weeks.  The insurance wanted to fix the car.  The body shop estimate came in at $22,800 and that was with NO engine or transmission work.   My parents basically told the insurance they wanted a brand new vehicle and would not accept a repair of the current vehicle.  They went back and fourth and finally my parents talked about just getting an attorney because their brand new car was ran over by a 16 year old girl who was insured by this company who had fallen asleep.  The insurance finally gave in, paid for all medical, a new vehicle minus the mileage on the current vehicle.  Ithink they charged them $250 in mileage fees (lol).  My parents really didn't want anything else but a new vehicle.  They could have easily got an attorney and walked with much more given the circumstances.  Obviously they were just happy no one was seriously injured.  My mother's friend actually ended up discovering some other hidden health issues (unrelated to the accident) when she had an MRI at the hospital, so it was a bit of a blessing in disguise for her.
