Cabbys are always a generation behind for the most part. I'm sure he means the 2nd gem cabbys, not the early mk1 cabs (eventhough it's on a mk1 chassis)

there wasn't even a lot changed on the "2nd gen" cabby to even call it a 2nd gen... it was all bolt-on aesthetics (i.e. body kit and an airbag steering wheel)... you can swap greater than 90% of the parts on a 93 Cabriolet onto a 1984 Rabbit Convertable

the Mk2 Rocco, while an A1 chassis is actually modified from the Mk1 Scirocco... the "Mk2" Cabriolet is NOT a 2nd generation body just a bunch of "revised" bolt ons

Taken from where?

When they modify the appearance of a car, it is generally refered to as the next generation following the previous model.

IE: The SN95 Mustang and New Edge Mustang are considered different generations, but yet they are still built on the same SN95 / FOX4 chassis....

SN95

New Edge

have you ever owned or worked on one?  the chassis is the same, the ONLY things differences were digifant 8v engines, a body kit, and a modified dashboard & airbag steering wheel... thats it

MK5 & MK6 golfs are on the same chassis and they're different generations. A lot of mk3 things will bolt to a mk2 with little or no modifications. The B3 and B4 passats look identical to me except for the grills. Barry's mustang example is a good one too. Ford used the fox bodied chassis from 1976 (Ford LTD) till 2004 (1979 was the first year on the mustang). The chassis was revised for the mustang in the mid 80's, mid 90's and 1999 to change generations before they switched to a new platform in 2005. Looks are what's important when car companies come out with a "new" model, so all but the most anal retentive on mechanical differences use the looks of the car to designate generations of models.

not even speaking mechanically.. .

but there is a distinct difference... You can make a Rabbit Convertable a so called "Mk2" Cabriolet by bolting the parts on... where as with the Mk1 and Mk2 Scirocco, there is no way in hell you can make a Mk1 into a Mk2, as the actual physical bodies are different.  I know we can get into the whole B5 & B5.5 BS... not the point I was trying to make.  Only the "I read it on the web so it must be true" people call a late model Cabriolet a "Mk2"

I can make my mk5 a mk6. I can make a b3 a b4. I can make a 1981 mustang resemble a Cobra mustang. Sometimes designers/engineers are lazy, or there's too much cost constraints to roll out a 100% new model. Sometimes all a model can afford is things like a body kit. With a low selling thing like the cabriolet I don't think VW wanted to put too much money into it. Regardless on the lack of mechanical differences, the cabriolet was updated to stay current with the new generations (mk2, Bx, Vanagon, etc), therefore it is an attempt by VW to make a 2nd gen convertible. The points on why or why it shouldn't be considered a mk2 is only debatable with enthusiasts.
