4dr 84 rabbit project
« on: January 31, 2010, 08:05:28 PM »

Alright. So some of you know that I recently bought an 84' 4dr Rabbit. I wanted to put up a thread about my project just cause i thought it would be cool. I'll get some pictures up of it soon.

Here are a few things I have to do.

Replace gas tank. Right turns starve the motor so it stalls.

Tune up. New spark plugs/wires, fuel filter, cap and rotor, valve cover gasket and a few other things. Already had idle adjusted and clutch. Idles a bit high at 1200 rpm's. Runs sorta lean.

Need struts, springs, and tie rod ends.

Sorry if this bores you but i thought it would be a cool thing to share.

I went out to u pull n pay today and picked up some rear brakes form an 85 mk2 so i can have discs all around. just need a caliper rebuild kit, mk2 disc e-brake cables pads, some soft or braided hoses, wheel bearings and rotors.

My project is going to be pretty slow when i have to replace the gas tannk, suspension and fix whatevers wrong with my motor. i runs fine but "crys" out the tail pipe. it used to idle at 1200 but now it"s at 1000 and then later it's 1500.

i got the fuel tank swapped out. the inside was all rusty. the fuel filter had specks of rusty metal and  the baffle had broken off so it slid all around the tank and the car starved on right turns. I have a new fuel pump put in and a new fuel filter. plug wires and NGK plugs are going in soon. $300 worth of parts and i only spent $180 something. next i'm going to flush the cooling system and put in a new radiator cause mine leaks from the mounts. i have spring break fairly soon but don't know what to do for suspension. i bought some eibach sportline lowering springs but i'm not sure what to get in the way of struts. any suggestions?

i had never heard about those before. are GR-2's good? there about the same price i think. i was thinking of going with some Koni's possibly. i'm not super worried about price but i really want good quality parts. i'd like to set my budget under $300 for new struts. i know i'm not going to get anything like bilsteins or something but it's a rabbit. i'm sure i don't need something to fancy.

Yep, Greg knows his stuff. If I remember correctly, they're basically rebadged bilsteins.

awesome. if there re-badged bilsteins i'll just get some of those. what's a place i can find deisel rabbit bushings? i tried bap geon's website but they didn't really say if they were for deisel or a standard rabbit. i guess there stiffer.

what is the difference in Diesel and gas bushings? OR do you mean the old school metal strut bushings? Let me know if you want those euro bumper mounts.

i heard the deisel rabbit bushings are stiffer than gas ones. if that's so ten i'd like to get those to tighten up the suspension without buying poly bushings. that way i don't have to worry about the keep up of poly bushings.

The normal rubber mounts work fine. If you REALLY want stiffer engine mounts you can get the poly inserts and front/rear bushings. I don't recommend getting the rear poly mount..as I have heard many many stories that because they flex, they will break quickly. So go rubber of the rear and front.

and it will suck from the amount of vibration. AJ had issues with nuts and bolts always vibrating loose when he had all poly engine mounts.

i wasn't going to do anything on engine mounts. just suspension stuff. i do need some new engin mounts though i think. they don't look to great.

the diesel mounts are the HD mounts like BFI sells for $50. if you look at a normal mount versus an HD there is a difference, the HD's have "fatter fingers" or "spokes" if that makes sense.

well i lost my damn keys so i'm kinda upset that i can't drive my car.  :banghead: but i came to find that my ranting and raveing about stiffer deisel suspension bushings was a waist of time cause they don't exsist. so now i'm back left with the decision on wether or not i should get poly suspension bushings or not. they squeek, crack over time and i don't know how they do with road salts and dry cold colorado weather. i'm leaning towards the stock rubber bushings so don't have to worry about that stuff. i can get poly rack n' pinion bushings and trailing arm bushings for $40. i'm still just a little hesitant when it comes to poly. plus i hear there hard to press in cause ther so stiff. the way i look at it is if i bought stock ones there going to be way better than what i have now.

I would just get rubber bushings to start. get all your maintenance done. save your money. Learn more about the bushings, get opinions. Then go from there.

I'm pretty sure everyone here has said to go with stock because poly isn't worth the headache. /issue

Don't you have a bunch of other things going on with the car at the moment that makes it so it can't even be driven? Suspension seems like it should be secondary to running.
