Review: rear wheel bearings.
« on: May 05, 2010, 01:44:23 AM »

Doing the brakes and bearings on the rear of the Scirocco. It's been two and a half years since I have touched rear drum brakes and I need a review on installing the rear wheel bearings, inner and outer. For the inner, do I punch in the race, then apply grease to the race, pack grease into the bearing, then insert bearing? And outer bearing seems pretty straight forward. but also punch in the race, apply grease on race, pack bearing, and insert bearing into race? (then the thrust washer, axle nut, etc.) I just want to get this right the first time. Thanks guys!

Swap out the old races with the new and pack the bearings. You can coat the races with grease or throw a lump of the stuff in between the races for a bit of peace of mind, but it's not necessary as long as you pack the bearings properly. Install is reverse of disassembly and make sure to properly torque the axle nuts.

18lbs? I thought the axle nuts are the ones you really have to crank on.

For the front, yes. It's something like 200+ ft lbs, but the rear sandwiches two conical bearings together on the spindle. Too tight and it doesn't spin and too loose the bearings just beat themselves to death with all of the present slop.

Ok so trying to find the inner wheel bearing race. Where on the spindle is the race? thought I figured it out. but no. Can't believe how little help the Bentley is proving with this.

here is a picture. Is it right at the base of the spindle on the backing plate? or?

99% of the time, the races and the cage wind up staying inside the drum ;)

In your case the races are pressed into the drum (inverted cones the the bearings ride in). Closest I've seen to races being pressed onto a spindle is with semifloat solid axle bearings, but that's a different beast altogether.

weird...cause I can't fit the drum entirely over the spindle cause the bearing catches the spindle.

I've had a few cheap wheel bearings that "stuck" onto the stub axle, had to rip out the grease seal to get the drum off... bad, sign of either shit bearing or one that overheated and warped.  The inner race should just slide off the stub

anyone wanna come by and lend a hand with these rear brakes. I don't know what I'm doing, nothing seems to be working out and the Bentley is still useless. I dont need it running...just rolling.
Edit: I'm wondering if I fucked up..am I supposed to put the inner bearing in the drum, then the race?

I hate drums... I abhor them... I burn crosses on the grave of the designer of the drum brake system....

outer race is pressed into the drum, the bearing just "fits" inside", the race is then held in with a grease seal
