Red Rocket (giggity) mini-build
« on: February 21, 2010, 09:34:32 PM »

i picked this jetta up from AJ in december or so, canceled the rabbit (pronounced rust) project by cutting it into tiny pieces and tossing it to scrap. I HAD dreams of a 16v crazy rabbit but somebody gnabbed my 16v from the bed of my truck.  :'( i came to my senses and disposed of that shell because i have no fab tools and had no hope of repairing that rust. happened on a digiII swap for $50 in denver that i couldnt pass up and so thats where i basically am. my transmission came to me for free from kenneth (0dd_j0b) we pulled it thinking it was fubar, but the detent bolt was loose ::) . after all that i just bought a bunch of seals and oem stuff and im gonna make it a peppy daily for the moment.
i dunno if its really a good thing to build a car just to build it again, but thats what im doing...

cleaned up the RV engine a bit tonight, bolted the flywheel to the crank...

after and before (the other engine is a PF im gonna slowly build once i get this thing runnin on the RV and have garage space)

resealed the trans and swapped the flanges to 90 mm (wanted 100mm but have 90 mm knuckles and axles)
ghetto bushing pull method. (virtual beer to anybody who knows what the metal block came from)

found out alt pulleys make good seal drivers for both the seals on an axle flange (i have like 5 random alternators laying around)

i use GM gasket maker on seals and stuff to make them Uber seal

ghetto flange compressor tool

bbs spoiler. only bbs item i have ever really liked.

the car in question

how i found it...

That metal block was mounted to the k member under the passenger side tranny output flange.

Looking good! I had dreams of picking up that car and fixing it, but way too many projects to ever seriously attempt it. I can't wait to see it at a GTG.

Is the GM gasket sealer really any better than regular RTV? That's what I always use for seals.

i dont know to be honest, i like it because it is thinner. really good in conjunction with paper/cardboard gaskets. GM gray RTV is my favorite RTV too, expensive, but i like making stuff NOT LEAK. i think leaks piss me off more than rust.

i think it is mars (GTI) because as i recall tornado wasnt on mk1's... i work at the phil long body shop and it will be getting resprayed in it's original color. luckily i have the code in the trunk still. texas car, its too clean to let it die, it has frame rail lift damage like every other mk1, and the pinch welds need attention, but other than that the body only needs little things

yeah but im not a body guy. i worked for saturn which died and is now this "phil long signature" which is basically like-new used cars. i do all the recon work on the signature cars and then they ship them to denver, chapel hills, and motor city. ;)

"night mode" causes the images to be overexposed... turn it off and turn on your flash ;)

well got a bunch of stuff done, ran into 2 snags, 1 of which kept us (me and 0dd_j0b) from hangin the engine in the bay. need to borrow a tap and die set from somebody if i can... the holes for the motor mount are rusty since this thing has never been in a mk1... dont have the right hardware for the g60 valve cover so I'll be looking at the hardware store tomorrow. got the bay cleaned up, wires removed, brake lines re-routed. trying to do manual brakes, didn't keep the m/c from the rabbit tho... heres some peektors. anybody got a tap set i could borrow?

need straight studs...

bay all cleaned and lines re-routed

kenneth...

strange cylinder head...

still not as clean as id like it to be
