I was reading an article about the new MPG rules for cars and trucks.....

Each auto company will have a different fuel-efficiency target, based on its mix of vehicles. Automakers that build more small cars will have a higher target than car companies that manufacture a broad range of cars and trucks. For example, passenger cars built by General Motors Co. will need to hit a target of 32.7 mpg in 2012 and increase to 36.9 mpg by 2016. Honda Motor Co., meanwhile, will need to reach passenger car targets of 33.8 mpg in 2012 and ramp up to 38.3 mpg in 2016.

sounds  pretty good right? then came this next part.....

Some small-volume auto companies such as Porsche, Aston Martin and Lamborghini will not have to meet the standards initially, but all automakers will need to comply by 2017.

OK, don't know about you, but how exactly do you get a 12cyl sports car that now averages 6mpg city 12mpg hwy, to meet this goal?

They have to average that. Its going to probably end up global man.  I dont know if you seen, but POrsche is working on a hybrid now.  All they have to do is make like... 3 50MPG cars while one can pull 14 MPG. They should be ok... Im sure there will also be a loophole.


And please remember Presidents cant make laws, they can only sign what congress puts up there.

while it is true that they could make 3x 50mpg cars and 1 14mpg car.......who would really spend 60k+ on a prius with a porsche badge and big reds.... fuchs that!

incorrect sir, the president can write executive orders, which are laws. congress can put a stop to them, the same way the president can veto a bill.....the supreme court sits and waits for someone to complain before it reacts to something, by that time it is too late the damage has already been done.  Which in itself is why we have an out of control legislative and executive branch. the supreme court doesn't stand up and say "hey um mr prez or mr senator, according to the constitution you don't have the authority to create new branches of the government, or force people to purchase xyz...etc" and according to the bill of rights 10th amendment, that power is reserved to the states and the people  respectively, sorry."

Once they realize how much money they'd be losing since they'd no longer be able to charge a(I don't know how they ever got away with this to begin with) gas-guzzler tax, it will change. Personally I think it's my right as an American that if I want to drive something that gets 2 miles per gallon, or I want to be a smug douchebag and drive a prius, that I can. Big lips I agree with you, we're fucked.
