Rabbit Race Car for sale - $2250/offer
« on: February 24, 2010, 07:05:43 PM »

OK - I wanted to build this thing, but can't do it.  Too many other deals falling through so hoping to sell this quickly - make me an offer, you never know...  I have a clear title for this car.  Could be streeted.

1979 (Square Headlight) Rabbit, raced in G Production SCCA.

Gutted for light weight.  No bumpers, fiberglass hood, no interior - no door windows or mechanisms, etc etc.  This thing probably weighs 1800lbs wet.

Drivetrain:
They run built motors (12:1 compression means it needs race gas, big cam, single 40 IDF carb, long tube header - think its a Techtonics but not sure, baffled and trap door oil pan)
Transmissions:  Tight ratios, supposed to have a limited slip (talking to the builder tomorrow to verify, or will jack it up and check).

Interior:
8 Point Roll cage - bolted in, but welded together.  Cage costs $1100 plus steep shipping.  Plus cost of professional welding.
Race Corbeau seat - out of date for fender-to-fender racing, but great for street or auto-x.  Pad on seat back needs recover/replace.  Harness belts out of date for fender-to-fender.  Wired for intercom radio.
Missing the fuel cell out of the rear, but its a standard 8 gal one apparently, so should be easy to replace.
Someone robbed the carb, but any 40 IDF style one will work (DRLA Dellorto, Empi HPMX etc)

Exterior:
CLEAN - especially for a race car!  Paint is retro 80's scallops, but in great shape.  THe body is very celan and straight - one dent on the lower right rear corner.

Suspension:
Bilstien Coilovers - supposed to be BSI Racing revalved units.  These cost an easy $1000-1500.  HD Strut bearings which are now un-obtanium.  Neuspeed front and rear swaybars.  Neuspeed upper front, lower front and triangulated rear stress bar.  All poly bushings everywhere.

Wheels - 13x6 Revolutions - these things are stupid lightweight - Dave can back that up, he's lifted them.  For the price, it doesn't include the extra set, but willing to consider it for the right price.

Hell - someone want this and the Miami Vice Recaros I would let it go as a package for $2500.

You can't build half this car for this price.  And if someone wants it for IT racing or something and can't use the engine or trans or whatever, let me know, I can sell it for less without the wheels/engine etc.

Like any fun car that's for sale, if it had an interior and was a bit more streetable I'd be able to convince the wife to buy it. She loves the old rabbits so it would have been an easy sale too. No room for a devoted race car....yet. :'( Good luck with the sale.

Yep - there's a guy from Samba that wants JUST the shell with the roll cage.  No anything else, which means it would all get parted.  And I would have to pick something up to use most of it!  Heh.

I think I'm gonna strip down the rabbit this weekend.  Anyone wanting something, lemme know.

I was wondering if anyone wants the rollcage?  It is a weld-together, but bolt to the body setup.  To remove it means it has to be cut apart (front section from the rear) and re-welded if you want a cage and not just a roll bar etc.  I'd like $500 for the cage, which is a smokin deal, especially if you ever look at what shipping costs on these mothers.  =)

The exhaust looks like a straight-through all the way to  the tailpipe, about 2" diameter.  The header looks to be an Autotech Tri-y (the wrapping covered it up so much I thought it was a 4-1!)  You could have the header and exhaust for $200 total.

OK, major stripping of the Rabbit done for the day.

Stressbars out, ready to go.

Swaybars out, ready to go - rear is a Suspension techniques, front is also, I think, but design is identical to Neuspeed.

Coilovers out.  I don't think they are Shine or BSI - Would take $800.

Header out - looks like a good Autotech with flex joint.  Exhaust is less than great, but cheap.

Seat and mount out - come get it Southcross.  The rear sliders where they were welded to brackets were broken/unwelded.  I will be happy to weld em up for ya, and do a better job than previous.  The seat smells a little funky so I will wash it and the harness belts tomorrow.

All poly bushes for front and rear suspension.

I've got NINE of the Revolution 13x6 wheels.  Nine.  Somebody's gotta want a set of these.

Motor and trans out - nice port work on this head and manifold.  Its a revving 1.6, that's for sure.

Oh - I'm gonna try and make it to the GTG tomorrow night so could bring some stuff in the Golf if anybody wants.

I've got a buyer for the shell and cage as one, but its a low ball offer.  Anyone want the shell and/or cage?  I can cut the cage out and it can be re-welded or sleeved as a bolt-together.

This is my engine/trans dropper/installer thing I made when I was in college pulling a motor and trans in a barn in Iowa with no power and a dirt floor.  Still using it.

thats kewl!  don't worry about rewelding, I haven't decided on which car its going into (Dasher or GTI, I'm leaning toward Dasher), I just want to make sure all the mounting hardware/brackets are there for the seat and harness.  oh, and is this a "short' harness that bolts to the cage or is it long enough to mount to say the rear seat frame?

Ah, you can come take a look at it and decide.  The sliders are seperate from any bracket, the bracket is an A1/2 chassis wedge-type.  If you wanna put it in the Dasher, get an extra dasher base and we can cut and weld it like I did the Recaro base, basically.  Whatever you want.

Coming down anytime soon?
